Help Selecting Protocol for AgTech Startup




TLDR: need help picking a protocol for an agriculture application with sensors evenly spaced 50 feet apart, preferably without line of sight.

My startup has pivoted from a machine vision application to IoT, and I could use guidance in selecting the best protocol.

There will be 18 devices in a metal barn 500 feet long and 40 feet wide. They will be arranged in 2 parallel lines 20 feet apart, with 50 feet between The devices longways. The devices need to communicate to a hub at the end of the barn. The devices do not have a line of sight as it’s not the preferred layout, but if it is necessary that could be arranged. The devices will take sensor readings once per second, process it, and push data to the hub when a sensor gets what meets a threshold failure reading, possibly communicating every 5 minutes for 3-5 hours of a day, on a battery.

I’m debating between a mesh network such as Bluetooth, ZigBee, or Z-Wave vs. Point to point with LoRa. Cost and power consumption are the most important factors as long as the device meets the range minimum.
