The beauty of single-board computers (SBCs), like the Raspberry Pi line, is in their versatility. They may not be as powerful as your desktop computer, or even your laptop, but they’re small and efficient enough that you can use them in just about any project. You can even use one to build your own completely custom laptop. That’s what “MakeFailRepeat” has done with his tiny wooden laptop, and he has a tutorial on how he did it.
MakeFailRepeat started this project after buying a 4″ HyperPixel 4.0 Raspberry Pi touchscreen from Pimoroni at England’s MakersCentral event. He decided that 800×480 pixel multi-touch display would be perfect for a miniature laptop, and set out to make one. Other than the screen, there is a Raspberry Pi 3, a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) Hat with a 2200mAh LiPo battery, and a small Bluetooth keyboard.
What makes this project particularly unique is the handmade wooden case that MakeFailRepeat built. He essentially designed that as two boxes that form the two halves of the laptop clamshell. The top even has a copper inlay that was set into hand-chiseled grooves. The two halves are connected with a 3D-printed hinge, and the components are attached to 3D-printed mounts. The finished laptop looks nice, and has no shortage of handmade charm.
