IoT (smart homes and firmware updates) research on US universities?

I’m currently studying for my masters degree in Europe. I could stay for 3-12 months in the US as an assistant researcher (we got a scholarship program where I live for that).

Does anybody know current research groups/projects in one of the following fields:

  • secure and reliable firmware updates for embedded systems/industrial/IoT (firmware signing, bootloaders, memory safe languages, encryption, unreliable networks)
  • smart homes (general)

I’ve looked at quite a lot different universities (mit, harvard, yale, UB, Upenn, stanford, princeton, Carnegie Mellon, duke…) but finding a research group in those fields is not easy. Most of the time the topics are slightly different or just the research direction and profs are listed without any further information.

If I find something I’d apply there as a guest researcher and would write my Masters Thesis about the work there.

Anyone knows research groups/projects in that fields (especially the first one)?
