One of the most important aspects of the maker community is that we celebrate all kinds of making, which removes the outdated divide between electronics hackers and the arts and crafts crowd. As far as we’re concerned, if you’re making something than you’re a real cool cat. That absolutely includes knitting, crochet, and other yarn crafts. And if you want to take that a step further and actually make your own yarn, the Electric Eel Wheel Mini 2 is for you.
The Electric Eel Wheel Mini 2 just recently launched on Kickstarter, and has already reached more than four times its funding goal. It was created by Maurice Ribble, who has already successfully launched a number of spinning machines on Kickstarter, including the Electric Eel Wheel, the Electric Eel Wheel 5, and the Electric Eel Wheel Mini. All of them were developed with the same goal: to spin wool and other fibers into yarn for your projects. Each was part of an incremental evolution, and the Electric Eel Wheel Mini 2 is the best yet.
Like all of the previous iterations, the Electric Eel Wheel Mini 2 is designed to be as compact and unobtrusive as possible. This one, however, runs more quietly and smoothly than any of the previous models. It’s small enough that you can take it anywhere and then stow it away when you’re not using it, and quiet enough that you can use it while watching TV. You can even spin yarn on the go by using a simple USB battery pack.
