What are you guys doing for reliable alerting/reporting?

Let’s say I’m collecting data from several sensors located around a farm. I want to receive a notification if something is outside of an expected range. However, given the potential harsh conditions of the sensors, I also want a notification if one of them fails to check in at its expected interval. To take that a step further, if the thing they’re reporting to/the thing sending the notifications is running on a Raspberry Pi, I’d also like to receive a notification if the Pi fails to check in with another device. If I were to build it, I’d probably have two Pis checking in with each other so I could push a notification if either of them fails, and likewise if a sensor fails.

I can easily build this myself, but I’m curious if I’d be reinventing the wheel. I’d rather not pay for a cloud based service, but is there already a push notification system focused on IoT with this kind of alerting?
